The Short Version

It's not "plastic guardrail"—properly rated composite railing is load-bearing fall protection.

But before you buy composite railing, ask whether it meets OSHA 1910.29. Under that rule, a guardrail has to be about 42 inches high and withstand 200 pounds of force. I've seen composite railing kits that looked right on paper and were noticeably wobbly in practice. The surprise wasn't the price difference—it was that they would likely fail an inspection.

The mistake I made was focusing on "composite" and forgetting the load rating. After the third facilities inspector asked for compliance documentation, I added one line to our checklist: verify the railing's tested load rating and compliance paperwork before purchase. The product is only as good as the standard it meets.

5. Are blue nitrile gloves food safe?

You'd expect a yes/no question to get a yes/no answer. It doesn't.

"Blue" is not a food-safety certification. The blue color exists so that if a glove tears, you can spot the piece in food before it reaches a customer. That's a smart practice, but it has zero to do with whether the glove material is safe for food contact.

A food-safe nitrile glove must comply with FDA food-contact regulations (21 CFR 177.1950 is the section commonly referenced for nitrile rubber). Per FTC guidelines, the claim "food safe" also has to be truthful and substantiated—so the packaging should say "FDA compliant for food contact." If it doesn't say it, don't assume it.

I watched a facility manager order blue nitrile gloves because another site used them. Industrial-grade, great price. No food-contact rating. When the health inspector asked for documentation, that conversation went badly. It's a textbook oversimplification: blue gloves = food gloves. The actual question is always: what does the certification say?

So, are blue nitrile gloves food safe? Some are. Buy the ones that say so, and ask for the documentation while you can still return the order.

6. The question you didn't think to ask: what prevents the most rework?

A checklist.

You might expect me to end with "buy from a trusted distributor" or "get three quotes." Those help, but the highest-ROI change I made was a one-page pre-order checklist:

  • The exact standard to meet (ASTM, ANSI/ISEA, NFPA, OSHA, FDA)
  • Size and width details, not just S/M/L or "she wears an 8"
  • Copy of the compliance documentation at receiving, so you can produce it on demand
  • Return and restocking policy, in writing, before you pay

Why does this matter? Because five minutes of verification costs nothing, and rework costs days. I've caught 37 potential problems using this checklist in the past 18 months. That $7,500 of mistakes? Almost all of it would have been prevented with this one page.

There's something satisfying about finally getting the process right. After the returns, the inspection conversations, and the awkward "you'll have to wait another week" messages to crew members—having a checklist that quietly prevents those problems is the closest thing to a free safety supervisor you'll ever get.
