I'm a quality and compliance manager at a safety equipment distributor. I review every order before it goes out—roughly 1,200 different items a year. In Q1 2024, I rejected 16% of first deliveries because the paperwork didn't match the product. That isn't because the vendors are bad. It's because safety buying often relies on names instead of specs.
Here's my main opinion: if you're buying safety gear, the brand is the starting point, not the finish line. The product is only as good as the standard it can prove.
That sounds obvious. It isn't.
Brand names are a shortcut, not a substitute
When someone orders a pair of Ariat FR cargo pants or Ariat CAT 2 jeans, I don't start by asking whether these are good pants. They usually are. I start by looking for the label that tells me what the garment actually does.
NFPA 70E defines arc flash PPE categories. A CAT 2 arc-rated clothing system needs a minimum arc rating of 8 cal/cm². So when I see a listing for Ariat CAT 2 jeans, I want to see that rating on the tag or in the spec sheet. It's not enough that the jeans have an FR label. An FR label means flame-resistant, but that's not the same as arc-rated. If I'm choosing between a pair that says CAT 2 and a pair that says CAT 2 with an ATPV of X cal/cm², the second one wins every time. Or rather, the second one is the only one I approve.
The same goes for Ariat FR cargo pants. I check the care label, the lot number, and the manufacturer's documentation. If a vendor can't tell me the arc rating or the testing standard, I don't care how good the stitching is. The stitching won't show up in an incident report.
I've been called overly picky. Fine. A sticker with the wrong standard got through last year, and I had to quarantine 800 units.
The standard that pays for itself: lab safety glasses
People skip the inspection part of safety equipment because it feels like a waste of time. I get the feeling. When we needed a rush order of lab safety glasses, I had about two hours to choose a vendor. Normally I'd test samples, but there was no time. I went with a vendor who had the right ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 markings and a good track record. Did I feel great about it? Not exactly. I second-guessed the choice until the first batch arrived and I could pop out the lenses and verify the markings.
A pair of lab safety glasses can look identical to a pair of fashion glasses. The difference is the Z87.1 marking on the lens or frame. Industrial eye protection needs to meet ANSI/ISEA Z87.1. If the marking isn't there, I won't approve it.
Maybe it's over the top to check every single pair. But I'd rather be over the top than have a worker assume they had impact protection when they didn't.
Ballistic vests and electrical fires need honest limitations
Now let's talk about the searches that don't fit in a normal PPE order.
A number of buyers have asked about the "Charlie Kirk bulletproof vest." I'm not here to discuss the person. From a compliance standpoint, the search phrase worries me because "bulletproof" is not a specification. A ballistic vest should have a rating from a recognized standard, like NIJ ballistic resistance levels. A Level IIIA vest will stop most handgun threats. It is not a rifle vest. A Level III or IV vest is rated for rifle threats. If a product page says bulletproof but doesn't list the NIJ level, that's a red flag. From an FTC advertising standpoint (ftc.gov), a claim like bulletproof also has to be substantiated. If the documentation doesn't line up, the sales copy doesn't matter.
This is where I'm going to sound less helpful than you probably want. I don't think there is a single best ballistic vest. There are vests that fit your threat assessment, budget, and wearability. If you're being asked to buy something because a particular public figure is selling it, that's a reason to slow down, not a reason to skip the spec.
Same with the old question: can you use a fire extinguisher on an electrical fire?
The short answer is yes, if the extinguisher is rated Class C. Class C ratings mean the extinguishing agent won't conduct electricity back to you. According to NFPA 10, portable extinguishers are classified for the types of fires they can handle. Water extinguishers are never safe on live electrical equipment. CO2 and dry chemical extinguishers commonly carry C ratings.
But here's the honest limitation: the best move is to de-energize the equipment first, if you can do that quickly and safely. The extinguisher is the backup, not the plan.
"But we've bought this model for years"
I hear that a lot. Same model, same vendor, same price. I used to accept it too, until a batch showed up with changed specifications and nobody caught it in time. The product had the same name, but the supplier had quietly switched the outer-shell material. It passed a basic visual check. It didn't pass the burn test.
There is a legacy belief in safety buying that once a product is approved, it stays approved. That may have been true when product lines changed every few years. Today, materials and suppliers change often. I had to learn that the hard way. We lost $22,000 on a rush replacement order because we trusted the old spec sheet.
One contractor saved about $400 on an order by choosing FR jeans without arc-rating documentation. It looked like a no-brainer until an insurance auditor asked to see spec sheets for every piece of PPE on site. That $400 savings turned into a $2,200 problem and a two-day work stoppage.
So my rule is simple: every new lot gets verified. Not fully tested, but verified. If the label is missing, the documentation is vague, or the product doesn't match the approved spec, it gets rejected before it goes to a customer.
Bottom line: buy the spec, not the story
I'm not saying Ariat gear is bad. I'm saying good gear is easy to miscount when you ignore the label. Brands and recommendations can point you in the right direction, but they don't replace the questions that keep people safe: What standard does this meet? How do I know? What happens if I'm wrong?
If you're buying for a lab, for a job site, or for yourself, ask those questions before you buy. And if you're looking at a ballistic vest or a fire extinguisher, remember that better doesn't exist outside a specific scenario. A fire extinguisher rated for an electrical fire is only the right answer when the system is live. A ballistic vest is only the right answer when the threat matches the rating. The best safety purchase is the one you understand well enough to admit when it's not the right fit.
